Halloween and All Souls’ Day in the Czech Republic

 

Halloween is not an official festival in the Czech Republic, though people organize events on October 31 in connection with the holiday. The festival originates from Ireland and it quickly became popular around the world. This day, kids get dressed in scary costumes, going door-to-door and collecting sweets at night. People usually decorate their houses with carved pumpkins, skeletons, spiders and scary characters.

In the Czech Republic however, people do not take this holiday very seriously, but Hallooween design and parties are very common.
 
 

November 2nd is the day of the “souls”, when people remember those who have passed away. The official Czech name is Památka zesnulých ("a remembrance of those who have passed"), but everyone calls the day dušičky ("little souls") or všech svatých ("of all saints"). People usually compare this holiday to Halloween, but these  two events are not the same. On All Souls’ Day, locals go to the cemetery and visit the graves of their passed away  relatives. They light candles, place flowers and spend a few moments there.

Both holidays are very known, more and more people celebrate these as a tradition. All Souls’ Day is celebrated in many Catholic countries, including France, Hungary and Italy, while, Halloween is held all around the world. One thing is for sure, these two festivals can unite families regardless of their overall feeling of joy or sorrow.
